Review by Gary BUTTERWORTH

Viet Cong, the self-titled debut album by Canadian post-punk band Viet Cong, is a haunting and powerful collection of songs that take the listener on a journey through a dark and brooding landscape. The album is a masterclass in atmospheric songwriting, with the band combining elements of post-punk, shoegaze, and psychedelic rock to create a sound that is both unique and compelling.

The album opens with the atmospheric "Newspaper Spoons," which sets the tone for the rest of the record with its eerie guitar riffs and haunting vocals. From there, the album takes the listener on a journey through a variety of moods and sounds, from the driving rhythms of "Pointless Experience" to the dreamy, almost ethereal sounds of "March of Progress."

Throughout the album, the band's musicianship is impeccable, with each member contributing to the overall sound in a unique and powerful way. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with the band using a variety of effects and techniques to create a sound that is both complex and mesmerizing.

For good or bad, the pressure to change their name from the culturally and historically unpleasant "Viet Cong" to the infinitely more innocuous "Preoccupations" certainly says a lot about how much things have changed in the last 40-50 years. I just wonder if those who vilified the band for their choice of name have any Joy Division or Dead Kennedys albums in their collection...you know, just wonderin'...Anyway, it was a shame that there was so much preoccupation with their moniker as it distracted from a terrific post-punk album that, at least for me, is one of the best I've heard since Interpol's debut. VC pressed all the right 1979-1981 buttons, creating an album equally dense as blackly cavernous, sultry as sandpaper abrasive; and with enough modernization and deft songwriting to avoid getting the derivative stamp. Any fan of post-punk's lovely grey monochromos is going to love this. Definitely recommended.

Remember seeing them play this album at Pitchfork some years back without any knowledge of who they were. Whole set had me enraptured but this song in particular was borderline a religious experience

The vocal line at 1:54 is similar to a Thom Yorke song, but I can't quite put my finger on which one at the moment.

I'm still conflicted about the name change. For me, personally, a good band is more than just the music it creates (e.g. band name, style & aesthetics, etc.). When all of these elements come together - combined with the actual music - it's creates something special. I'm honestly not an insensitive or unempatheitc person but I feel the band was severely pressured and browbeat into changing their name. They had no other choice in the end; there's no way they could've remained successful, making a decent living creating music as Viet Cong.

Maybe I'm wrong and I just don't get it? It just seems that we've come to a point in our culture where you simply can't offend anyone at anytime for any reason. Causing offense, or, causing controversy was probably the furthest thing from the band's mind when they adopted the name and, yet, it ultimately created a shit storm that swallowed them whole and forced them to change the name of the group. In any event, thank you +music is good for the upload.

I think makes no sense to change the band's name old vietcong to preocupations on this disc release, thas was made before the name changed in 2015
